We started out at the historic Detroit Foundation Hotel–a converted firehouse-turned-boutique hotel, and moved on to yet another historic Detroit gem–the Scarab Club. There was no end to the happiness and laughter, and I'm so grateful to have witnessed the exceptional humor and love on this wonderful day.

Portrait Session: The Culyba Family https://www.daststudio.com/blog/2017/8/culyba-family I'm so honored to have been able to shoot the Culyba family and their lovey little star, Paulina. Such a lovely family, and such an amazing, charismatic darling. Maurice Chevalier said it best: "Thank heaven for little girls!"

Portrait Session: The Ballnik Family https://www.daststudio.com/blog/2015/4/ballnikfamily It's no easy task deferring one's Oo-ing and Ahh-ing of a wee one or resisting the urge to exchange birth stories (as a mother myself) to get into a photo session, but when the family is so utterly joyous, so proud, so in LOVE one cannot help but want to document it. As I edited these photos, I relived the indescribable bliss that emanated from these new parents (in spite of a freshly-wakened, very-hungry baby!!). Their elation is palpable, and one cannot help but smile!! Love love love to the Ballniks and baby Emmett!

Portrait Session: Rhyder Lee https://www.daststudio.com/blog/2014/10/rhyder-lee At 24 hours old, this little lady was so amazingly alert as I photographed her to the soundtrack of her squeaks! I feel so blessed not only to have been able to welcome the precious Rhyder Lee into the world, but to also witness the burgeoning love between mother and child–which no words can adequately express. I can't wait to see her grow up, and hopefully I'll be able to document more of her life.

Portrait Session: Jezrael, Pregnant https://www.daststudio.com/blog/2014/10/jezrael-pregnant It wasn't difficult to brainstorm a location for this shoot–Jezrael, a long time Greenpoint, Brooklyn resident, is such a neighborhood fixture that going anywhere else just didn't make sense. What is difficult (this isn't exclusive to Jez, and for which I can adamantly vouch) is convincing the soon-to-be mother, in all her discomfort at 36 weeks, that she is as beautiful as she is. In spite of the physical self-adjustment that comes with the transformation that is pregnancy, I found Jezrael quite serene in her condition (though she argued otherwise!), and I think it really does translate in the photos.

Aside from the importance of the exterior location, within the intimacy of her own room it hit me that the certain vision I had in mind for my shoots became ever more significant with the highlight of Jezrael's tattoo–It commemorates her father's life. Knowing the significance of her father to her, I couldn't help but bring together all the elements for what I can only consider a photograph of three generations–past, present, and future. And I hope the best of her father, what Jezrael loved most of him, passes on to the sweet little girl that is soon to come.

I can't wait to meet the little darling!!!! Jez, you'll be a wonderful mother.

Portrait Session: Joe & Marilyn https://www.daststudio.com/blog/2014/10/joe-marilyn I love being able to catch kids at play, for myriad reasons: 1) It's such a natural environment for them–the smiles, the curiosity, the sheer joy come across so beautifully on film; 2) Watching kids in a creative process seems to inspire the same in me; 3) It's just plain fun to get down on the level with them!

Shooting brother and sister duo Joe and Marilyn didn't disappoint. These two, like so many siblings, are so starkly different, but together they are the sweetest things!

It was difficult to edit down the wonderful shots so as not to overwhelm this blog post, but I think these images relay the adorableness that are these delightful kids!

Custom Travel Photography Books! https://www.daststudio.com/blog/2014/10/custom-travel-photography-books I find it's always thrilling viewing the photos I've taken while traveling. Reliving those moments–the beauty, the experience–is what makes everything worth while. The downside of it all, however, is that–especially since everything is digitized–I only end up reliving those moments once, maybe twice, post-travel. There is something lacking, I think, in viewing images exclusively on a screen rather than the tangible photographic memento. But who has time to edit, design, and produce beautiful memorabilia after a holiday?
